Signal 13 – A Call to Action – A Year In Review

It was a year of firsts for Signal 13 and Baltimore’s Police families, and it was all possible because of generous people like you who stand with the brave men and women who dedicate their lives to protecting the citizens of Baltimore.

For the first time, more police families will benefit from larger scholarships to help ease the financial burden of paying for college for their children.  In this video interview below, Signal 13 Foundation CEO Nancy Hinds interviews Baltimore Police Information Tech Supervisor Lynda Lovette and her son David, a Signal 13 scholarship recipient.  Hear how the Lovette family was aided by a Signal 13 grant after a family tragedy and a 4-year scholarship for David who attended the University of Lynchburg where he graduated in May 2021.

Thanks to an anonymous donor, Signal 13 provided commercial-size refrigerators to each of the nine districts so police officers who patrol the streets can grab a cold drink during their shift, compliments of Signal 13.

Signal 13 hosted more events than ever before, and the level of participation was encouraging. People want to support police and Signal 13 provides a direct link to Baltimore’s police families.  Donors showed their support in many ways this year including with sponsorships and by attending our events. Whether it was the wine tasting at Jimmy’s Famous Seafood in June; the virtual crab feast in October; or the spectacular evening at the Bygone in November, hosted by the Atlas Restaurant Group, everyone involved shared a common goal – raising money for Signal 13, and providing more resources and financial assistance to police.

To show our appreciation to the men and women in blue, several Signal 13 Board members handed out 1,100 turkeys to police before Thanksgiving, thanks to our many sponsors. It was the perfect way to say thank you to the police for their service to Baltimore.

Finally, as we close out this year, we reflect on the police families who truly benefitted from Signal 13’s support, thanks to all of you. Please take a moment to meet one of them.

Following a shooting outside his home in August 2019, Sgt. Isaac Carrington, then a 22-year veteran of the Baltimore Police Department, spent weeks at Shock Trauma recovering.  Wheelchair-bound, Sgt. Carrington’s life will never be the same.

But on January 5th, he got a lift when representatives from MileOne Autogroup and its nonprofit arm Wheels for Change, the Signal 13 Foundation and the Baltimore City Lodge #3 Fraternal Order of Police presented him with a handicap accessible van. The organizations joined forces to raise the necessary funds for the vehicle totaling over $70,000, which was outfitted by and purchased from Bedco Mobility.
