Signal 13 – A Call to Action Newsletter – June 2025

$1.6 Million and Counting

That’s the impact of Signal 13’s support on Baltimore police officers and civilians in the past 10 years. That number continues to increase as more first responders seek assistance in the form of a hardship grant or scholarship for their college-bound kids. It is rewarding work, but none of it would be possible without our donors and supporters. Thank you for being there so Signal 13 can be there for them.

A Story of Resilience

One of our recent beneficiaries is Sheena Scott. She’s an emergency dispatcher and a lifeline for officers on the streets of Baltimore. She loves her job, but life turned on a dime and she found herself looking for her own lifeline when she was severely injured in a car accident and unable to work. Her husband was laid off after the Key Bridge collapse. Things were dire for Sheena and her family. She exhausted her savings and turned to Signal 13 as a last resort. Sheena is now back at work and grateful Signal 13 was there for her.

A Hero’s Welcome

Retired Sergeant Isaac Carrington is an inspiration for many. He lives his life in a wheelchair after being shot in the line of duty. Signal 13 was there for Isaac and his family when they needed it most. He’s now giving back to the organization that gave so much to him. Sergeant Carrington received a standing ovation when he joined CEO Nancy Hinds at the commissioner’s weekly command staff meeting to talk about Signal 13. Thank you for your service, Sergeant Carrington!

We Appreciate Our Officers

Signal 13 is teaming up with the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 3, for a popular summertime tradition. We’re on the road again to serve hot dogs and hamburgers to the hard-working men and women protecting our streets. The FOP does a great job making sure their fellow comrades know they are appreciated. CEO Nancy Hinds joined FOP President Mike Mancuso, FOP 1st Vice President Buckey MacDonald and Deputy Commissioner Kevin Jones at the Northern District recently.

Speaking of Thank You…

A big shout out to Corrigan Sports for always putting police first at their annual Baltimore 10-Miler on June 7. Despite the rain, our police runners were all in as they honored their friend Officer Anthony Ward who was killed in a car accident last year. His widow Alicia was on hand to cheer them on. The police group included a charity chaser who raised more than $8,000 for Signal 13 by passing as many runners as he could. Thank you, Corrigan Sports, for always finding creative ways to support the brave men and women in blue.

Sponsors are Needed

Our biggest fundraiser of the year is Saturday, October 4 at the Maryland Zoo. Your sponsorship will allow hundreds of police officers and their families to come to the zoo for a free day of fun. It’s a great way to thank Baltimore City Police for their service. Click here for more information and to become a sponsor.

Saving The Best for Last

The Signal 13 Foundation in Baltimore is pleased to share new leadership appointments for its Board of Directors. These changes reflect our ongoing commitment to supporting Baltimore’s police officers and their families. Congratulations to our officers for 2025–2026 – President Steve Sibel, Vice President Frank Boston, Treasurer Kevin Wesner and Secretary Barb Simmons. Read the full announcement here.

Please Lend Us a Hand in 2025

We have a small favor to ask. Like Sheena Scott, thousands of Baltimore Police families have trusted the Signal 13 Foundation to support them during difficult times and when they need assistance paying for college for their kids. Like other nonprofits, Signal 13’s funding depends on generous donations from individuals, companies and foundations. We can’t do what we do for Baltimore City Police in times of need without your support. Requests for assistance are increasing and we rarely turn a grant or scholarship applicant down. Signal 13 is celebrating 40 years of helping Baltimore City Police, and the Board’s goal is to do even more to make their lives a little easier during stressful times. We do this because we believe in supporting the brave men and women in the Baltimore Police Department who put their lives on the line every day to protect us and the city we love.
